I am aware that adaptations often vary from originals. Wuthering Heights is more a story of vengeance than romance. This depiction restates and, in my opinion, misrepresents the novel. It is a thoroughly romantic film, down to that final shot where the spirits of Heathcliff and Catherine walk down their favorite road. Laurence Olivier and Merle Oberon portray the tragically mismatched lovers, Heathcliff and Catherine. Gregg Toland’s deep focus cinematography and Alfred Newman’s lush music transport the audience to another world. William Wyler’s 1939 film of Wuthering Heights was not the first adaptation, but it remains the best-known version. Emily Brontë’s novel vs William Wyler’s film
